I think alliances are better served when you have only 2 neighbouring nations, one, you want to destroy, and the other one you should make an ally. Anyone who declares war on you doesn’t mean you have to fight him, you can just block him out with forts and garrisons until a time that you are ready to invade him. You can leave minimal troops in garrisons while your neighbours are friendly, but if they turn hostile then you should stop expanding and build up your defences. At the start of the game, you should trade, make friends, and expand. There are also nations that like you and will stick by you up until the time that you become a superpower, then no one will like you. Note, That there are some villains in the game who will never like you, and they will turn on you when you are weak so watch out for these ones. You should just keep neutral and building up your lands, and the other nations will look for more easy targets to attack. If you are surrounded by nations I think it’s better to stay neutral and friendly with them than joining an alliance with one of them. I always tell players (especially new players) not to join an alliance. Starting an alliance with someone is like opening Pandora’s box, you don’t know what you are in for. If you can stay friends with all your neighbours then that is the best place you could be. Diplomacy is like playing with dice, it’s a very unpredictable business. ![]()
